BGU Lecture Series: Physics For All

Register to attend Professor John Preston's lecture series Physics For All!  Professor Preston has degrees in physics and physics education and enjoys preparing talks on the relevance of physics to everyday life and to other fields of study such as art, history, and philosophy. Lecture 1: Physics for (Visual) Art Lovers: a description of color and how we perceive it in nature, paintings, theater lighting, and home lighting.  (Tuesday, January 30th) Lecture 2: Physics for Music Lovers: a description of sound and music and how it is produced by various instruments, how it is affected by music halls like the Galliard, how we detect distance to a source and the limitations (and future) of hearing aids                         (Tuesday, February 6th) Lecture 3:  Physics for History Buffs: a description of turning points in history that were affected by the knowledge (or ignorance) of physics including Columbus, the Battle of Britain, Midway, German atomic bomb program, and the US nuclear power industry        (Tuseday, February 13th) Lecture 4: Physics for Philosophers Part 1: a description of how physics has influenced our search for answers to the big questions of Where do we come from?, What are we made of?, and Where are we going?. It explores the influence of physics on philosophy including the Greeks, Thomas Aquinas, the enlightenment, the US constitution and Declaration of Independence, to the Big Bang and the Hubble and Webb telescopes .                                                             (Tuesday, February 20th) Lecture 5: Physics for Philosophers Part 2: a description of how physics has influenced our search for answers to the big questions of Where do we come from?, What are we made of?, and Where are we going?. BGU: Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (WEEK 1)

Join Drs. Hamilton and Rupak from MUSC for a four-part series on Artificial Intelligence in medicine and exploration. The event will take place every Wednesday from March 6th to March 27th at 3:00pm in Blackmer Hall.
3/6/24 Lecture 1: Introduction to AI in Healthcare: We will take some time at the beginning of this lecture to introduce ourselves and describe our background and current work in the area. We will then provide an introductory overview of AI and its role in Healthcare. Our goal throughout the entire lecture series will be to make these talks as interactive as possible.
3/13/24 Lecture 2: Types of AI in healthcare with special attention to NLP; This lecture will delve deeper into the subdisciplines of AI in healthcare with special attention to natural language processing (NLP).
3/20/24 Lecture 3: The Ethical implications of AI in Healthcare. This lecture will discuss the ethical challenges and dilemmas surrounding AI and healthcare such as data diversity, bias, trust and transparency amongst other topics.
3/27/24 Lecture 4: Final Round-up. This final lecture will be a brief review of major themes we've discussed with an open discussion reviewing topics of interest we have collected from the audience during the previous lectures.

World Affairs Council Charleston: Global Population Trends: Fact And Fiction

Transportaion for this event will be departing from the Front Commons at 5:15 Dr. Jennifer D. Sciubba, author of 8 Billion and Counting: How Sex, Death, and Migration Shape Our World, will delve into the world of global population trends, exploring how we arrived at this point and where our trajectory is leading us. She debunks the common myths and misconceptions that often cloud our understanding of population dynamics. Discover how reading the world through a demographic perspective opens doors to fresh insights. Dr. Sciubba is one of the world's foremost experts in demographic trends and their implications for politics, economics, and social relationships. She works to educate the public about population trends, and she advocates for policy-relevant research on fertility, mortality, and migration as the basis for investments we need today to shape the future we want tomorrow. Dr. Sciubba is affiliated with the Wilson Center and the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC. Formerly a tenured professor in International Studies at Rhodes College, Sciubba has studied at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany, and served as demographics policy consultant to the U.S. Office of the Secretary of Defense. She is a vice-chair of the board of the Population Reference Bureau. Dr. Sciubba received her Ph.D. and M.A. degrees from the University of Maryland and her B.A. from Agnes Scott College. BGU: The History of Landscape Painting in Western Art WEEK 3

The History of Landscape Painting in Western Art with Rebekah Compton (Monday, February 19 - March 18 at 11:00am) This 4-week course will introduce students to the history of landscapes in Western art. Students will learn about artists from Italy, France, England, and America, who were innovated in the genre of landscape painting between 1500-1900. Students will also gain an understanding of the principles and techniques employed for environmental designs in art.
